Community Intervention

"If only" is a phrase you hear too often in mental health; If only we know what was going on; If only they knew they weren't alone; If only we have recognised the signs. If only we had access to the treatment; If only; Unfortunately, the conversation tends to be short, and after tragedy has already struck-suicide, homelessness, unemployment and incarceration.Fortunately, Aibeth centre knows how to act early. We conduct mental health-gap action program (mhGAP) intervention at community levels using 3-Ps (Promote, Prevent and protect)

Promote

Mental health promotion is a positive, effective approach we use that involves best practice and policy that enhances capacity for good mental health for the whole population through action at the individual, community and societal levels. We rely on collaboration of all sectors of society to strengthen emotional resilience and coping skills, and create supportive environment that reduces barriers to achieving and maintaining mental health. The benefits of mental health promotion include

  • Improvement in physical health

  • Greater productivity at work, school and home.

  • Improved relationships in families and lowers rate of substance abuse and other social factors such as reduced crime and violence ( VIC health 2005).

Prevent

Protective factors are helpful and support recovery. Some of the framework/categories Aibeth Centre uses include:

Heath: Maintaining good health by building the brain and the body to have the ability to do all the things needed.

Safety or security: Creating sense of control whee environmental or interpersonal factors don't affect the ability to attend to or pay attention to needs.

Resources: This entails developing tangibles and services available to meet up needs.

Relationships: This involves building interpersonal support that help meet up with need in a healthy manner.

Protect

Preventing the onset of mental health problems before they occur and supporting people to stay well, is Aibeth's Centres important approach to improving mental health in our communities. Some of the approaches include:

  1. Primary prevention through stopping mental health problems before they start.

  2. Secondary prevention by supporting those at higher risk of experiencing mental health problems.

  3. Tertiary prevention by helping people living with mental health problems to stay well.
